Sniff Your Troubles Away

There are numerous studies showing lavender aromatherapy helps people relax and receive higher amounts of slow-wave, deep sleep.  Plus, the more often one uses a lavender aroma before bed, there is an additional reinforcement effect that promotes more relaxation with each nightly inhalation.  Experts do caution that lavender will not cure severe insomnia, but it definitely brings benefit.

Ayurveda teaches that the nose is the gateway to the brain.  Smell can reach the brain in an unconscious way.  Different aromas can actually work on a subconscious emotional level to help lessen stressful emotional states.  Emotional stress can cause physical stress, so helping to alleviate emotional stress brings physical benefits.  Ayurveda likes to use blends of aromas because of their synergistic effect.  I like to put a few drops of an aroma in a small bowl of water next to my bed.  It just makes me feel good.  Sometimes when I am working hard in the kitchen, I will sniff an aroma and my whole mind set turns around.

Science is backing up the ancient wisdom of aromas.  It is a great healing tool with no harmful side effects.  Do your own science experiment and try some lavender before bed.

Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
