Childbirth is normally associated with a lot of pain, exertion and fear. Even if a birthing mother uses anesthesia, there is the waiting time before the doctor will administer the pain medication and sometimes the pain medication does not have a complete effect. Some mothers opt for natural childbirth and have a good outcome, but other still have a lot of pain and discomfort. There is a new method that has shown promise: Hypnotherapy-Based Childbirth.
In hypnosis a person is susceptible to many types of suggestions including the brain's perception of certain senses. For childbirth, the contractions are suggested to feel comfort, anticipation and peace. The word contraction may be changed to pressure waves. Hypnosis has been used for years to successfully achieve weight loss, smoking cessation and chronic pain management.
As an Ayurvedic practitioner, I have always believed that our mental state controls much of our health. The idea that the deep state of relaxation of hypnosis can create a positive childbirth experience is proof of the incredible power of our mind. In a religious work titled The Ethics of Our Fathers, there are many wise statements from the Biblical sages. One particular verse asks, "Who is strong? One that can control his emotions." To maintain positivity and balance in the face of adversity is true strength. It may not be easy, but we are all a work in progress. Accept where you stand and start from there. There are great benefits to be had.
Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
