Turmeric: Science Is Confirming Benefits Ayurveda Always Knew

The common kitchen spice turmeric has been used as medicine for thousands of years in India and Ayurveda.  Today, modern science is finding it to be beneficial for treating the pain and inflammation of arthritis.  There are also studies underway to evaluate its anti-inflammatory effects in other diseases.

Ayurveda uses turmeric to bolster the immune system, purify the blood and promote healthy skin.  It can strengthen digestion in addition to eliminating toxins in the gastrointestinal tract.  Turmeric can support healthy blood glucose levels and it has been used to soothe and strengthen joints, which helps maintain normal, comfortable movement.

In Ayurveda, herbs are usually combined in formulas so they can maximize their effect.  The sum is greater than its individual parts.  Turmeric is usually used in smaller doses in traditional and current Ayurvedic formulas to ensure that its properties are digested and absorbed well.  One problem with the use of turmeric in regular herbal formulations is the herb's bioavailability.  Arjuna Natural Extracts Ltd., a company based in India, has created a way to increase potency by making an essential oil with the turmeric.

Ayurveda also uses turmeric as a spice when cooking to take advantage of its healthy properties.  Maybe you would like to try some turmeric in some of your favorite soups and stir fries.  You will make your meal an enjoyable, health experience.

Stay healthy & well,
Lisa

  1. I just read that turmeric should be mixed with black pepper and dissolved in a bit of olive oil to have a anti-cancer effect. Apparently India has more pollution and environmental contamination than the US but far less cancer due to putting turmeric and pepper in much of the cooked food.
