Probiotics Tearing Down Your Belly Fat While Building Good Bacteria

Weight loss continues to be a hot topic.  Most people if asked would like to lose weight, but they just cannot seem to.  There are many blocks in this area ranging from emotional issues, lack of time to prepare good food or not knowing which foods to eat.  There can also be hormone disorders, digestive issues, and other physical causes.

As a Health Coach and Ayurvedic Health Practitioner, I know there are many blocks to losing weight.  Weight loss is a complicated issue and not as simple as just cutting calories.  In my blog, I like to give user friendly tips and information to help you on your journey to be the person you were meant to shine as.  One step at a time is the best way to reach your destination.

I recently came across a study that found obese people who drank fermented milk with the probiotic strain Lactobacillus gasseri SBT2055 for twelve weeks actually lost weight and abdominal mass versus the control group who consumed plain milk.  Obese people increased their caloric intake, but they did not gain weight.  Why?  It is because of the digestive benefits of the probiotic.  Probiotics build healthy bacteria in the gut, which helps to build digestive function.

In Ayurveda, digestion is one of the main pillars of good health.  Food that is digested and assimilated builds a healthy body.  The body is receiving nourishment, so it can function optimally.  Undigested food results in a body that is "starving" for nutrition and has toxic build up from food that has not processed through the digestive system.  Probiotics help to strengthen digestion by populating the gut with helpful bacteria.

Not just obese people benefit from healthy gut bacteria, it helps improve health in everyone.  Since virtually all of us are exposed to factors that destroy beneficial bacteria in the gut, such as antibiotics (whether you take them for an illness or get them from contaminated animal products), chlorinated water, antibacterial soap, agricultural chemicals and pollution, keeping your gut bacteria balanced should be considered an ongoing process.

Try to eat fermented foods frequently and take a high-quality probiotic supplement.  This is one of the few supplements recommended for everyone.  Your outer and inner gut will thank you.

Stay healthy & well,
Lisa

  1. I work out very hard but eat far too much I have a stock in my fridge of the little containers that are like yogurt and I think they are probiotics but I have never had any big weight loss. I think I just eat too much

    1. Hey Mike, Thanks for your comment. Small container yogurts are usually filled with sugar which outweighs the probiotic benefit. Better to get it from supplements, fermented foods or plain yogurt. You are right that overeating can derail the good probiotic effects. Overeating is sometimes a way for the body to get more energy. Where are you losing your energy: little sleep, stress or too much exercise? Take Care.

  4. Hi Raka,
Thanks for your question. Probiotics and fermented foods like tempeh, kefir and sauerkraut are good ways to build healthy bacteria. The medicines may be hard for your body to process. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions about the medications. Try exercising around 4 to 5 times a week with vigorous exertion to help your body move out toxins and strengthen its ability to process the medicine. This will help your waist area too. I hope you feel good.

    1. David,
Thank you for your comment. It is hard to answer this as a general question because each situation is unique. Skin issues and fatigue can mean toxins. The probiotic helps with digestion so toxins are less likely to accumulate. However, the probiotics can be heating to pitta, so they need to be used carefully.
      Take care,
      Lisa

Have you ever heart about "Dong Quai" (Angelica Sinensis)? Known to pacify Yang and nourishing Yin?

    1. Hi David,
It is nice how conscious you are of your body type and try to heal naturally.
Dong Quai is usually used for female issues but it is helpful for arthritis and colds. Its nature is nourishing but in excess it can aggravate pitta. I am not that knowledgeable in the ying/yang theories of oriental medicine.
