How You Move Your Muscles Affects Your Mood

In Ayurveda and other holistic healing approaches, the whole person both mind and body is evaluated and addressed for total health.  While the idea that a person's mental state affects health is becoming more accepted, another predictor of health is how we move our body.  Specifically, recent research has found people with an upright posture are found to be more positive, have better self esteem and reacted to situations more constructively.

The quickest and easiest way to boost your mood and emotions is to sit up straight by elongating your spine and aligning your head with your shoulders.  This simple shift in posture causes a positive shift in emotions and attitude which allows for improved coping skills.  Circumstances and issues are perceived differently which lets a person make better choices.

Thinking that sitting up straight will alleviate stress and change your life appears simplistic.  Yet, most of the time we need just a gentle nudge to redirect our energy and get back on track.  Even if we are able to take a small break from our stress and come back a little refreshed, life gets a little easier.  The posture move is the perfect way to start.  Try it for a day.  Every time things appear hectic or overwhelming, move your posture to a straight and fully aligned position.  Check in and see how you feel and if there is a positive shift.  Little shifts add up to a big movement.

Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
