When I write my blog, I have a proof reader. He is my husband Gary and he has his Mercury (the planet of communication and mental processes) in Virgo, which is its natural ruler. I appreciate his attention to detail and I especially appreciate his patience. While some of my health interests and ideas aren't always his thing, Gary always gives me his full attention and support. So, a public THANK YOU!
This week Gary is going to like my blog because it deals with trees. My husband loves to plant trees, care for trees and just be around trees. Maybe this is why he puts up with the proof reading job (among many other things).
While the benefits of spending time outdoors in a natural environment has been shown to benefit human health, a recent study went and quantified the many positives of living around trees. After reviewing data of public trees and health records in Toronto, the study's leaders found that living around an extra 11 trees per street lowered the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, another study, found taking a walk in a natural area has been shown to promote mental well being. Specifically, it decreases the pattern of negative thinking known as rumination, which is linked to an increased risk of depression.
Ayurveda also teaches that time spent out in nature is healing and especially helpful for emotional and mental stresses. A morning walk that takes place at the same time as the rising sun helps depression. Taking a walk outside is an Ayurvedic prescriptive to lighten the drive and irritation experienced by Type A personalities.
I don't know about you, but I am more than sold on the benefit of trees and nature in my life. I have the real life experience of my husband, the teachings of Ayurveda and a scientific study. Holistic healing doesn't have to be complicated, a simple walk outside will do wonders for your body and spirit.
Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
