Is Vitamin D A Diet Pill?

Vitamin D has recently been the focus of many studies.  Adequate levels of vitamin D has been shown to improve immunity, cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of diabetes, promote mental well being and many other benefits.  Now it has been shown that people with high levels of vitamin D have a healthier, lower body weight than people with low levels of vitamin D ("Vitamin D Status and its Relationship to Body Fat, Final Height, and Peak Bone Mass in Young Women" by R. Kremer et al., J Clin Endocrinal Metab, 1/09). 

Get outside and get 10 -15 minutes of sun (without sunscreen) a few times a week which helps the body make vitamin D.  Supplements containing vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) are also needed to bring up vitamin D levels.  Vitamin D3 is the most readily absorbed form of vitamin D.  For best absorption, the supplement should be taken with a healthy fat.

Check your vitamin D levels with your doctor, since most people in the Northern Hemisphere are deficient.  Supplementation will bring great benefits including a healthy weight.
