Your Sensitive Bowel

Many people suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is an uncomfortable condition that disturbs normal bowel function.  Essentially, the individual alternates between constipation and diarrhea with varying levels of abdominal pain.  The bowel has been shown to be hypersensitive and/or inflamed.  This causes the symptoms.  Many people suffer with the condition and allopathic medicine offers minimal help and the condition is usually chronic.

Recent studies have shown the herb peppermint to reduce the hypersensitivity and inflammation in the bowel area.

In Ayurveda foods and herbs have energetic qualities based on their taste and their post digestive effect.  Peppermint is cooling in nature .  The effect of cooling would energetically soothe inflammation.  This is why it is helpful to the IBS sufferer.  Fennel is also a cooling herb and it soothes the digestion, stomach and intestines.

Ayurveda would treat IBS with a many prong approach.  The cooling herbs would be helpful, but other factors like diet, when and how foods are eaten, and the spirit state of the individual are considered as well.  We are treating the whole person not just trying to cover the symptoms.  In other words, it is not just your bowel that is sensitive, but you as a whole are sensitive.  Let's get to the source of the issue and move forward from there.

Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
