From a rational standpoint, a real man is a person who demonstrates honorable conduct and is able to rise to most occasions with dignity and responsibility. If the man smells nice, that is an added bonus.
Many times people don't get a chance to personally interact with a person to determine whether this person is a real man. Most often, people make judgments about other people based on their appearance or an intuitive hunch. This is where smell comes in. A recent study found that women judged men as more manly when they had used men's scented deodorant.
Before a man decides to act inappropriately and cover it up by wearing deodorant, one should remember the smell just created an initial impression and impressions can fade quickly when poor behavior undermines them.
Ayurveda uses smell as a healing modality because our sense of smell is one of the strongest triggers for emotions and memory. Essential oils support the immune system, help to ground and balance energy, alleviate depression, pain, anxiety and stress, help to focus the mind, promote sound and restful sleep, balance hormones and alleviate pain. The sense of smell is so powerful because our olfactory receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, the most ancient and primitive part of the brain, which is thought to be the seat of emotion. Smell sensations are relayed to the area of the brain that has more conscious thoughts only after the deepest parts of our brains have been stimulated by the smell. Thus, by the time we are aware of a smell, the scent has already activated the limbic system, which has triggered more deep-seated emotional responses.
Men, as the study demonstrates, can use the unique action a smell triggers by wearing deodorant, but they should try to keep up the good publicity.
Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
