The Fat That Makes You Skinny

Low fat and no fat are what many people promote as the way to lose weight and stay trim.  However, we need fat.  I am not talking about bad fats like trans fats found in baked goods or frying.  Good fats come from nuts, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, flax oil, ghee and avocado.  These kinds of fats are rich and satisfying, making you feel full longer and eating less processed carbs.

A recent study found that people who added half of a fresh avocado to their lunch reported a significantly decreased desire to eat by 40 percent over a three-hour period, and by 28 percent over a five-hour period after the meal, compared to their desire to eat after their usual lunch without an avocado. In addition, they felt more satisfied three hours after the meal.  Avocadoes also help lower blood sugar and raise good cholesterol while lowering bad cholesterol.  Further, it has been shown to decrease the risk of Alzheimer's while promoting good mental health. It really is a wonder food.

The best part is you feel satisfied after eating it.  It is a health food that tastes good and is easy to incorporate into your diet.  I serve it on salads or slice it into sandwiches.  Mash it as a dip, but be careful with the chips!  Mashed avocado is good on rice cakes too.

I also notice my skin is healthier and less prone to winter dryness when I eat good fats.  So, eat fats for beauty, health and indulgence.  Just make sure they are the good fats.

Stay healthy & well,
Lisa
